Use of fiberoptic device for intracranial pressure monitoring

Shin Gi-Soo

Abstract
The authors compared readings of intracranial pressures measured by strain-guage transducers(SGT) in ventricular catheters with those measured by fiberoptic devices (FOD) in lateral ventricle, subdural space, and brain tissue respectively.
The pattern of changes in ICP waves land their responses to the variable therapeutic manipulations revealed similar results in all three compartments. The drift and accuracy of FOD waves were reliable within clinical relevant periods.
It was concluded that FOD would be safer, simpler and more accurate than available systems.
